Art in Motion—Singer All-terrain Competition Study

  • May 17, 2021

Singer Vehicle Design, known for its reimagined classic Porsche 911s, has unveiled the All-terrain Competition Study (ACS). In collaboration with the legendary Richard Tuthill of Tuthill Porsche—synonymous with some of the most successful Porsche race and rally cars—Singer has introduced a classic 911 engineered for the world’s most challenging off-road races.

Limited to just two versions, the ACS represents a new benchmark for off-road capability in a 911, designed to conquer the harsh terrains of extreme races like the BAJA 1000 and Dakar Rally. One version (depicted here) is tailored for rigorous off-road challenges, while its sibling focuses on tarmac. Both versions stem from the same visionary concept, fulfilling a single client’s wish for the ultimate off-road 911.

The ACS has a turbocharged 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six engine, with power outputs ranging from 450 to 600 horsepower, blending modern strength with a touch of nostalgia. It features a 5-speed manual transmission, all-wheel drive, and a suspension system offering an impressive 300mm of travel.

About the Illustration

This illustration of the ACS was drawn by hand, inspired by a reference photo from a Singer press release—it showed the ACS in motion, drifting through corners, kicking up dust and gravel, but doing so with such grace and confidence. My immediate reaction was to draw it as I saw it, and try to capture the seemingly riotous feeling of how it might feel to drive it at speed and to ‘feel’ the motion. I was also attracted to the neutral color palette in the photos, which allowed the car’s red interior accents to really pop.

Procreate on iPad with Razum Oil Painter brushes

For the final illustration, I used Procreate on an iPad along with Razum Inc.’s Oil Painter collection of brushes. These brushes provide a coarse yet smooth texture that enhances the painterly vibe of the artwork and help capture the motion that had initially caught my eye.

Pencil Sketch by Shawn Glad

My initial pencil sketch included a helicopter pursuing the Singer ACS, highlighting the support role helicopters play in races like the Dakar Rally and BAJA 1000. Although this element was omitted from the final illustration, it introduced a dynamic aspect that might resonate with enthusiasts.

Cheers!

What is Shotgun Racer?

The name, Shotgun Racer, draws inspiration from the term ‘riding shotgun,’ which originated in the American Wild West. This term referred to the person sitting in the front passenger seat of a stagecoach or wagon, armed with a shotgun. Over time, it has evolved to symbolize sitting in the front passenger seat of any vehicle. It reflects our desire to get closer to the action, diving into the world of motorsports, exploring cars, drivers, and their shared history.
