Get Ready for the Third Annual Corkscrew Hillclimb 2024

Rising from the shadow of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, part of the broader Car Week festivities that happen each August in Monterey, California, another event has emerged: the Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, now in its third year, takes advantage of the raceway’s iconic corkscrew turn. By flipping the course and running it backwards, this event adds an innovative twist to traditional hillclimb challenges, making it a must-see event for motorsport fans.
This year’s hillclimb will take place Sunday, August 11th, the weekend before the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Drivers begin their 1-mile ascent near the grandstands, navigating through turn 11 and two additional turns before entering the corkscrew at turn eight. The finish line is just beyond as the drivers reach the apex at the top of the corkscrew, competing for the fastest ‘lap’. Additional details for this year’s event may be found following the link below:
Among the highlights from last year was Chris Locke’s return in the Historic group, driving his John Player Special Lotus 77—yes, the same one driven to victory by the legendary Mario Andretti—securing the second-fastest lap behind Patrick Long in the Gunther Werks 1995 Porsche 993 Turbo. Yet, the run that stole the show belonged to Brian Antle giving his Pre Runner the ‘full send’. His performance was nothing short of spectacular, offering a ‘hairy-chested’ exhibition of torque, suspension flex, and horsepower. Oh, and noise! The unexpected agility of the Pre Runner on the asphalt, coupled with its immense power in the corkscrew, electrified the crowd. Its ascent—marked by wheels spinning and clouds of smoke—drew cheers and applause. Definitely cool.
I’ve highlighted my favorite images below from last year’s hillclimb. They show ten different cars from various classes at different intervals, as they progress upward through the Corkscrew. The photos were taken between the pedestrian bridge, where they first come into my view, and the apex at the top of the Corkscrew, where they cross the finish line. For reference, I’ve marked this location with an orange camera icon on the course map above.
Cheers!
